Car advertising tips

Read our guide on how to create a successful advert. Getting it right first time could be the difference between making a quick sale and having to wait patiently for interest to develop.

Our guide covers:-

What to include in your advert:

  • 1) Full Make and Model of car
  • Enter the full car type, for example, "2007 Ford Focus ST-2 Orange Hatchback"
  • 2) Year and registration letter
  • 2003/53 or 1999/T
  • 3) Mileage
  • Mileage is an important consideration for most buyers, ensure you include accurate mileage
  • 4) Specific colour
  • Whilst the manufacturer's colour may be useful, it's important you state a precise colour
  • 5) Tax
  • You should state if vehicle is currently TAX'ed or if registered with a SORN
  • 6) M.O.T.
  • State when the vehicle's current M.O.T. expires
  • 7) Service history
  • If full service history has been maintained, state this, otherwise describe recorded service history
  • 8) Number of owners
  • Buyers are often interested to learn how many previous owners have owned the vehicle, fewer owners could hlelp promote a quick sale
  • 9) Features
  • Detail the vehicle's features and options, as well as any modifications
  • 10) Asking price
  • Consider your asking price carefully by reseaching your vehicle's current market value against similar vehicles for sale and using online valuation services (see useful links)
  • Glass's - UK's leading used car valuations
  • 11) Reason for sale
  • Provide a short, honest, explaination for selling the vehicle to reassure a potential buyer
  • 12) Photos
  • First impressions count, so ensure you include well photographed images of your vehicle to create a good first impression. Remember to remove your registration number, if visible, from any photos
  • Pixlr - FREE Photo editing services (Pixlr Editor) (Pixlr Express)

What not to include in your advert:

  • 1) Assumptions - let buyers form their own opinions
  • 2) Vague comments and phrases
  • 3) Anything you know to be dishonest or factually incorrect
  • 4) Photos from other vehicles or illustrations of the vehicle
  • 5) Anything that miss-represents the sale
  • 6) Personal information should not be included in the title or description fields

Summary title and full description:

  • 1) Attract interest by keeping the wording short and including only essential information
  • 2) Too little information however, can frustrate buyers and potentially discourage them
  • 3) Draw out your vehicle's selling features but avoid use of capitals which make text difficult to read
